Beacon Score

Each of the three major reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion - employ unique algorithms for the purpose of calculating a "credit score." This numerical value may be referred to as a credit score, FICO score, or Beacon Score. The phrase "Beacon Score" is actually the trademarked designation for the unique method of credit score calculation used by the credit reporting agency Equifax.

In a general sense an individual's Beacon Score is a measure of that individual's credit value to potential lending sources. The national average for a Beacon Score in the United States is 640 with a score in the 800-900 range being considered exceptional. (Scores in that range are, however, quite rare.)

Various financial factors employed in the calculation of a Beacon Score include past payment history and current amount owed as well as length of credit history, new lines of credit established, and types of credit used.
