Top Tips for Choosing the Best Debt Consolidation Company
Don't trust everybodyThe first tip is not to trust a company that alleges to have all the solutions to your problems: especially those who say that they are
free debt consolidation companies. You can find them quite easily in midnight TV ads, newspaper advertisements or in your spam mail. Debt consolidation is a very serious matter. If a company tells to everybody that they can work miracles, then there is something wrong about it.
Do your researchThe second tip is to do a very detailed research. The first place at which you can start is the yellow pages. There, you will find the companies that dedicate themselves to debt consolidation. Once you have their names, make a basic search in the internet and find out more about them. There may be newspaper or magazine articles, or comments made by previous clients. This will give you more information on the best debt consolidation company that is available.
Thankfully, there are organizations that care for consumers. One of them is the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). Created in 1951, the goal of this nationwide organization is to provide counseling and educational services to people. According to them, once people visit them, up to a third of them manage to control their finances by their own.
Among the many services that they offer, the most popular ones are budget counseling, debt management, counseling referral services, financial literary courses and house counseling. In the case of debt consolidation, you can ask the company that is offering their services if they are accredited with the NFCC. Afterwards, you can ask the NFCC if that information is correct.
Another public organization is the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies, or AICCCA. The goal of this national membership organization is to provide counseling in consumer credit, instruct consumers in debt management and provide financial education services. As in the case of the NFCC, only the best rated debt consolidation companies are accredited under the AICCCA.
Another interesting place to look for is the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Founded in 1912, this organization provides several services, including: reports on business reliability, charity review, consumer education, dispute
resolution and truth-in advertising. If you want to know if, for example, a mortgage debt consolidation loan company has had any problems in the past, then it is the perfect place to look for it.
Make an appointmentThe next step is to make an appointment. That way you will be able to interview the representative of the company. Remember that body language says as much as spoken words. If the salesman starts scratching his face or seems to be very nervous, then thank them for their time and look for another debt consolidation company.
If you feel comfortable with the person that they send you, ask him all the possible questions that you can imagine. Especially the difficult ones like "what happens if I can't continue paying you?" or "can I make advance payments? If I can do them, is there a penalty fee?" Only trustworthy companies will answer you with direct, honest answers.
A debt consolidation loan company can save you from the dangers of becoming a pariah to the financial system. And this isn't a very nice scenario. Without credit cards you won't be able to buy online, rent a car or even buy a plane ticket. You become practically disconnected from the national economy. So, if you are looking for one, do a thorough research and find the best debt consolidation company.
